Quantitative Quality Indicators (QQIs)
Description
Quantitative Quality Indicators (QQIs) are artificial flaw (notched) shims attached toparts to be inspected. They are commonly used to demonstrate both magnetic field
strength and direction within a part during Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI).
Design: Thin steel shims with etched patterns in circular and cross shapes to provide
indications in all directions.
Application: Useful for setting up magnetization parameters and daily system
performance checks.
Material: Manufactured from low carbon steel.
Compliance: Designed to provide indications when magnetized to at least 30 gauss,
as specified in AS 5371.

Surface Preparation & Attachment
Keep the package sealed until ready to use to prevent corrosion.
Clean the protective oil coating from both faces of the QQI using SKC-S, acetone,
or a suitable solvent prior to use.
The part and shim must be clean and dry before application.
Place the QQI flaw-side down in intimate contact with the part being investigated.
Securely fasten on all four sides using non-fluorescent tape (e.g., Scotch 600
series) or a strong permanent adhesive.
Field Balancing (Multi-Directional Fields)
Determine longitudinal and circular fields separately by slowly increasing
amperage until visible indications appear.
Demagnetize the part and clean the QQIs between each field direction check.
In multi-directional mode, adjust amperage until the entire circle of the QQI is
visible, indicating balanced fields.
Note: QQIs do not hold residual fields; continuous magnetization methods produce
the best results.
Maintenance & Storage
Shims must be protected from corrosion when not in use.
Store QQIs submerged in a solvent (such as MEK or naphtha) or coated in mineral
base oil.
Re-use is acceptable if shims are not distorted and maintain intimate contact
when replaced.
Industry Standards Compliance: AS 5371, ASME BPVC Section V Article 7, ASTM E709,
ASTM E1444, ASTM E3024.
